Abba Birthday Cake

Here is one of the posters from issue #16 of the International Abba Magazine which shows the group blowing out the candles on their 10th anniversary birthday cake.

 

International Abba Magazine #16

The 16th issue of the International Abba Magazine was first published during March 1983 and featured a picture of Abba with Kenny Evertt on the front cover. The editorial section included the following updates -
  • Benny and Bjorn confirmed that they were collaborating with Tim Rice to write a new musical
  • Frida was looking to re-locate to London
  • Agnetha was in the studio with Mike Chapman recording her solo album
The magazine included two major articles the first covering the 1982 Polar Music Awards where Agnetha, Frida and Abba all received awards. The second article continued from issue #15 detailing Abba's last visit to London to promote "Abba The Singles - The First 10 Years" which included -
  • Frida and Kenny Everett having a drink and a cuddle
  • The group received a presentation containing 23 gold singles
  • Agnetha and Benny were guests on the Saturday Superstore TV program
  • The group appeared with Noel Edmonds on "The Late, Late Breakfast Show" where the video for "The Day Before You Came" is shown for the first time

Super Trouper Smash Hits Lyrics

To celebrate the anniversary of "Super Trouper" hitting number one in the UK singles chart here are the lyrics as printed in Smash Hits...

 

Abba Date - 29th November 1980

On the 29th November 1980 Abba's latest single "Super Trouper" hit the number 1 spot in the UK singles chart. The single had entered the chart two weeks earlier at number 13 before jumping up to the number 2 spot week commencing 22nd November.

The UK top five w/c 29th November was as follows -

  1. Abba "Super Trouper"
  2. Blondie "The Tide Is High"
  3. Dennis Waterman "I Could Be So Good For You"
  4. Stephanie Mills "Never Knew Love Like This Before"
  5. David Bowie "Fashion"

"Super Trouper" stayed at the top of the UK chart for 3 weeks and was the third biggest selling single of the year.

The single also reached number 1 in Belgium, Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands. The table below shows the chart positions from around the world -

Abba Date - 27th November 1982

On the 27th November 1982 "Abba The Singles - The First 10 Years" reached number 1 on the UK album chart.

The album had entered the chart at number 6 the previous week before moving up to take the top spot. The top 5 selling albums that week in the UK were -

  1. Abba - "The Singles - The First 10 Years"
  2. Kids From Fame "The Kids From Fame"
  3. Dionne Warwick - "Heartbreaker"
  4. Status Quo - "From The Makers Of"
  5. Phil Collins - "Hello, I Must Be Going"

The album was the 25th biggest seller of 1982 in the UK.

Collection - Agnetha And Christian Single

Following yesterday's album featuring Linda today I am posting pictures of one of her 7" singles with Christian from my collection. The single "Pa Sondag" ("On Sunday") was originally released in 1987 to promote an album of children's songs that Agnetha and Christian had recorded together.

Here are a few pictures from one of my favourite Abba books "The Complete Abba" by Simon Sheridan. The book takes you through each single, album, TV show and video collection in chronological order and is great read.

 

Collection - Agnetha And Linda Chris tmas Album

Here are some pictures of Agnetha and Linda's Christmas CD "Nu Tandas Tusen Julejus" ("Now A Thousand Christmas Candles Are Lit") from my collection.

The album was originally recorded in 1980 but not released until October 1981 where it reached number 6 in the Swedish charts during January 1982.

Archive - Abba On The Cover Of Record Mart Magazine

Abba were featured on the cover of the May 1999 issue of Record Mart magazine in the UK. The article inside the magazine, titled "Pathways", covered the group's recording history over six pages and also included an interview with Michael Tretow.

International Abba Magazine #15

The fifteenth issue of the International Abba Magazine was published in February 1983 and was focused on Abba's visit to London the previous November to promote "Abba The Singles The First 10 Years".

The editorial section confirmed that Abba's latest album had reached the number 1 spot in the UK on its second week and the Agnetha was in the studio recording her solo album which wouldn't include the track "I'm Still Alive".

The rest of this issue then covered in detail Abba's London visit including when they arrived, what they had for dinner, shopping trips and meetings with the press.
